Don’t call her Elizabeth, odds are she will think you’re talking to someone else. She was born in the shadow of the Snowy Mountains, Victoria, Australia. Her parents were keen bushwalkers and their frequent excursions led to Beth’s fascination with plants, and in particular, the Snow Gums of the Australian high country.
Upon finishing high school, Beth was accepted into Melbourne University to study a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Botany and Micro-biology. As part of her study, she was introduced to the forensic applications for botany.
Two years into the course, Beth’s parents were killed in a road accident. She increasingly turned to her study to help cope with her grief, knowing her parents had been proud of her academic achievements. Graduating at the top of her year, Beth responded to an advertisement and secured a role at Washington’s Smithsonian Institute, along with a position at a DC University for Doctorate studies.
Beth is compassionate, and has the Aussie attitude of treating everyone the same - from the highest authority to the lowest. She knows how to keep a secret, but won’t lie. Her ability to understand both sides of most arguments can cause conflict, both within herself and with others. An independent woman, Beth still loves to feel the security her partner can provide.
It was while filling in for her ill supervisor and delivering a talk on forensic botany to a group of trainee FBI agents that she met Nick Markov. Embarrassed by his stare during the lecture, she had been surprised to find him waiting for her outside the labs when she left. He had offered her a pink rose and dinner, and after a short romance, they married in Vegas.
Beth is 28 years old at the start of Roses.

Full name: Warren Joseph Pearce
Hobbies: Running, boxing (for fitness), playing chess.
Education: Bachelor of Criminology, Master of Business.
Born: Washington DC
DOB: 10th May
Favourite colour: Blue
Career: Marines, then FBI
Family: No siblings. Married to Carolyn.
Cares about: His small circle of close friends, his integrity and honour, justice.
Fears: Being open emotionally, disgrace/dishonour, harm coming to his friends.
Born and bred in Washington DC, Warren grew up surrounded by politics and Federal Agencies. With an inbuilt sense of duty, Warren joined the US Marines after finishing high school. Completing his Bachelor Degree, he joined the FBI when he was 25, subsequently completing a Master of Business. His passion for bringing criminals to justice led to his promotion to the position of Assistant Director, despite his sometimes unorthodox methods of investigation which saw him reprimanded on several occasions. He is easily annoyed by office politics and won’t give respect unless it’s earned. A strong leader, he sets high standards for himself and the Agents he supervises.
Cool, calm, and collected describes Warren to perfection. While these attributes work well as an Assistant Director with the FBI, it doesn’t always translate well socially. As a result he has few close friends, but when he befriends you, he is loyal and kind. Warren dislikes social functions, avoiding them when he can.
Warren is 45 years old at the start of ‘Roses’.

DOB: 4th April
Favourite colour: Black
Education: Bachelor of Political Science
Family: Russian parents. Mother deceased, Father back in Russia but not in contact.
Cares about: Being in control, his own agenda, Beth
Fears: Loss of control, loss of independence.
Growing up bilingual in Russian, Nick was ostracised by his peers and looked down on. He quickly learned how to turn the table on his tormentors, developing ways of retaliation that earned him fearful respect. As he grew and matured, he gained friends, settling and excelled at school. During senior high, Nick became interested in politics and the power behind the scenes in government, and once he’d completed a Bachelor of Political Science he joined the FBI.
Because of his good looks, Nick had been popular with girls, but the plans he had made for his future never included a committed relationship – until he met Beth. Instantly attracted to her, he found himself weaving her into his plans for the future. Fearing losing her when he had finished his FBI training, he took her to Vegas, proposed, and they married.
