One of the few rules of writing I do agree with is the first draft of anything should be rubbish. Not deliberately rubbish, but…well, a first draft.
The plan is to sit down with a story idea and simple let it out. Get the story down, don’t worry about how it’s done, just do it. I love this. I love letting go and pouring my imagination onto a page.
So, I recently started writing the fifth book of the White Rose series. I know, only two are published so far, so it’s a bit strange I’m onto the fifth! The first draft of the fourth book was finished earlier this year, and the third book is currently with my editor.
I’m having a lot of trouble writing this book. Not because I don’t know what happens—I do—but because I’m out of the habit of writing badly.
You see, after I finished the draft of book four (tentatively titled Bombshell), I then edited Seeing Red, and following that, edited the third White Rose book (Dangerous Craft). So when I sat down to start writing book five, I stopped at almost every sentence and assessed it, changed it, checked it again, wondered how to rephrase something…you get the picture. I was still in editing mode. Bad news.
It took me a few weeks to firstly realise why I wasn’t making much ground with the story, and then break the habit and just allow myself to write badly. I never thought I’d have that problem (haha), but it’s been a struggle.
I think I’m back on track now, and the characters are starting to make their opinions of the story line known. I love it when their personalities take over and show through, changing what wouldn’t have been genuine for them into something that is. I think it’s a good sign. The story has changed course twice so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it ends up!
Word count so far… 5,000.
Working title of book five? Focus.
