This past weekend held an important milestone.
Anyone who’s been within earshot over the past few months will know that later this year my hubby and I will be heading over to the USA for a holiday. Well, more of an immersion time for me, but a holiday too.
I’ll be honest with you. Until recently I never wanted to go to the US. Despite the numerous attractions of the country and the wonderful group of relatives who live there, I had no intention of visiting.
That was until Beth came into my life, rapidly followed by my other characters.
When I started to write I found ways to see the places I wrote about. Google Maps, photos, and traffic cameras all played a role in seeing some of the locations in my books. Slowly, but surely, I started to want to see them in person and to experience them myself. Then want turned into a burning desire. I ached to walk the sidewalks Beth and Warren did, to see the road Nell took to get to work, to hear and smell the things around these people of mine.
So last year I’d had enough of wanting and told hubby we were going, and we found the resources (i.e. money) and booked our trip. And yes, I’ll be doing all I want to do. We’re visiting New London and the Submarine Museum that borders the New London Subase, and we’ve booked accommodation in the suburb where Beth and Warren live.
The milestone? Last weekend saw the six-months-to-go tick over. I know, not that exciting, but it’s another thing ticked off on the build up to the trip. It probably adds to my excitement that I’m currently writing a story set in the New London area, and every time I research something, I get excited all over again.
Six months and counting… and yes, there will be lots of photos!
What's it about?
My thoughts on writing, the research I do, and what interests and inspires me as a writer.
