Bombs. Not something you really want to be researching on the internet these days. I needed to know about them for my book, Bombshell, so I did the research, but with an ear out for the often joked about ‘knock on the door’.
First things first, I needed to know how much damage a single stick of dynamite would cause. How would I know how many to use in the story otherwise? As usual, there was a lot of information on the world wide web on the topic, and I found this video of some lads playing around.
Along with explosive power, I needed dynamite statistics: how big is a single stick, how much does it weigh, who can get hold of it, etc? For the record, a stick of dynamite is about 20cm long and 3.2cm in diameter, and weighs 190gms.
Next up was a slightly more concerning topic (I mentally rehearsed what I would say to the coppers at the door) – how to build a bomb. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know what you need to have to make a stick of dynamite go off. I do now (smiles). There are various ways of making dynamite explode, so I had a look at few and chose the one that fitted the skills of the character involved.
This is where I drew the line—partly because of what I actually needed to know, and so I would have a defence in court. I know what is needed to make a bomb, but I don’t know exactly how to put it together. It wasn’t something I needed to put in the book, so why research something like that when it’s not needed (Your Honour)?
All joking aside, the amount of detail I needed was limited, so that’s all I looked for. It’s not a good idea to be wandering about the internet looking for unnecessary information like bomb building.
Once I’d sorted all of that out, all I had to do was work out how the device was going to get to the right place at the right time. Much easier!
I’m going to stop the post here as I don’t want to give away any details about the story, but I can tell you it was a fun and eye-opening topic to research.
Just how I like them!
